Join us for an evening of storytelling and reflection with Black Garnet Books. Settle in for an immersive experience as Twin Cities poet and educator LM Brimmer reads aloud while you create your own collage. In an evening exploring Black liberation, Brimmer’s poems and essays invite participants to reflect on themes of action, rebellion, and possibility.

Each participant will design one page exploring what liberation means to them, which will later be gathered into a collective book of ideas and expression. Draw inspiration from books, magazines, literature, and your own imagination, and let your feelings flow onto the page. The evening concludes with an optional share-out and exchange of ideas.

Seating is first-come, first-served; space and materials are limited.

Bios

LM (Lisa Marie) Brimmer is a poet and educator living on Dakota and Ojibwe lands in Minnesota. In 2024 they received a Minnesota State Arts Board Grant for a yearlong grounding in nature in greater Minnesota. In 2019 they co-edited Queer Voices: Poetry, Prose, and Pride (Minnesota Historical Society Press). Brimmer has published poems in many literary journals, including Concision Poetry Journal, Voicemail Poems, Quarterly West, and the Colorado Review, among others. Currently, Brimmer is Artistic Director of Queer Voices of Minnesota. You can find them through 66 Wands, LLC, teaching English and composition at Century College, and leading the practicum for University of Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Leadership Program.

Black Garnet Books was created by St. Paul community member Dionne Sims during the summer of 2020 in direct response to state violence and the purposeful and unconscious exclusion of Black people from the literary community. The brick-and-mortar store opened its doors in 2022 to address racial inequality within the publishing and literary industries, both nationally and within Minnesota. The work continues under the leadership of Terresa Hardaway, PhD, who acquired the store in 2024 and remains unapologetic about the ways in which Black lives matter and how Blackness must be centered in movement work. In an effort to address inequality, the store’s shelves are curated to focus on literature by authors and illustrators of color, ensuring that each purchase directly supports the continued telling of these stories. All books and merchandise are sold at fair prices that honor the craft and energy required to create art and sustain the community and industry.
