Real estate agent May Lin (Yang Kuei-mei) and her street-vendor lover Ah-jung (Chen Chao-jung) crash in a seemingly vacant rental apartment in Taipei, unaware that it is being occupied by burial-plot salesman Hsiao-kang (Lee Kang-sheng). Shot using slow, contemplative movements despite the rhythms of a fast-paced city, the trio individually search for satisfaction and connection in 1990s urban Taiwan. An early example of director Tsai Ming-liang’s exploration of pathos and alienation is brought to life in this new 2K restoration. 1994, Taiwan, DCP, in Mandarin with English subtitles, 118 min.

Part of Cinema Revived: Timeless Selections from the Vault, an ongoing presentation of notable feature-length films from the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection.
