Throughout the 20th century and continuing today, queer nightlife has gathered artists, cultural producers, and weirdos to create temporary spaces that support and celebrate expansive and inclusive expression of gender, sexuality, and identity. Though the impact of nightlife on personal and collective culture cannot be understated, it is only over the last decade that major cultural institutions have begun to recognize nightlife as an art form. Gathering Twin Cities artists working in Twin Cities nightlife, the panel discussion collectively considers the struggles, urgencies, and joys this art form faces locally today.
Panelists include Nadirah McGill (Gully Boys and Queer Mud Wrestling), Marcela Michelle (Mama San), and Mari Navarro (Gothess).
Mari Navarro is a non-binary artist and creator of Gothess. They create spaces focusing on inclusion for their BIPOC queer siblings. They grace the DJ Altar under the alias DJ Q and have been a DJ for over a decade. Originally from Chicago, where they first found their love of the goth subculture, Navarro saw the freedom the subculture brought by challenging all the binaries. That influence made a huge impact and shaped the perspective and playlist of DJ Q as an artist.
After starting their DJ career in Portland, Oregon, they played in The Star Theater for HIVE (one of the longest-standing goth nights) and were a resident DJ at The Coffin Club (Portland’s horror theme bar). They have created a beautiful home base in Minneapolis that allows them to unleash all the darkwaves in a wonderfully receptive dance community.
This event will have ASL interpretation.
