One of the most radically inventive works of the American avant-garde, Stan Brakhage’s five-part epic blurs psychological and cosmological scales of perception. The film follows a mythical narrative of a woodsman ascending a snowy mountain, with Brakhage employing astrophotography, multiple superimpositions, rapid montage, and handpainting to create a dream of subjective experience. Inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1992, the film is presented on a rarely screened 16mm print from the Walker’s collection. 1961–64, US, 16mm, silent, 78 min.

Part of Cinema Revived: Timeless Selections from the Vault, an ongoing presentation of notable feature-length films from the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection.

Bio

Chris Marker (1921–2012) was a French writer, photographer, and filmmaker, and a foundational figure of the Left Bank Cinema movement. Emerging first as a writer in postwar Paris, Marker moved into photography and filmmaking in the 1950s, developing a form of essay filmmaking that anchored globe-spanning travelogue cinematography with a hesitant and reflexive philosophical voice. After early films like Sunday in Peking (1956), Marker gained international recognition with the experimental science fiction film La Jetée (1962), the leftist political historiography A Grin Without a Cat (1977), and the philosophical collage Sans Soleil (1983). Marker’s multimedia work, including collected essays, collaborative film projects, and interactive digital media, continued until his death.
