Premiering at the 2010 Venice Film Festival, this visceral, unflinching work employs a rare perspective on postwar Middle East through the eyes of four Palestinian women. Based on journalist Rula Jebreal’s semi-autobiographical novel, the film opens in 1948 war-torn Jerusalem as Palestine is being partitioned, and where orphaned Miral is caught up in her turbulent surroundings. “[Schnabel] create[s] a raw, moving, poetic portrait of a woman whose personal story is inextricably woven into the bigger history unfolding all around her” (2010 Toronto International Film Festival). 2010, 35mm, in English, Hebrew, and Arabic with English subtitles, 112 minutes.
