“[Meredith Monk is a] high priestess of enchantment . . . she invites you to bypass the part of your brain that craves logic and understanding and to respond intuitively to the wondrous qualities of her sounds and images.”—New York Times

Songs of Ascension explores the spiritual, vocal, and physical notions of ascension across geography and time. This evening-length work—a combination of Meredith Monk’s pristine music and iconoclastic theatricality and artist Ann Hamilton’s raw, sensuous visual elements—will refocus your perceptions of music-theater. Add the otherworldly sounds of Monk’s Vocal Ensemble and top New York instrumentalists and you’ll experience “one of America’s most brilliant and unclassifiable theatrical artists” (New York Times).

Repeat Cycles: Meredith Monk on Voice, #MeToo, and Recurring History

Born in the late years of the Second World War, Meredith Monk has seen it all—14 presidents; six major US wars; the birth of the modern Civil Rights, anti-war, and environmental movements; 9/11; Black Lives Matter; #MeToo; Donald Trump. Through it all, the multifaceted artist says she has been responding through her art to events in the world—but rarely through words. Here, as she returns to Minneapolis to perform in Cellular Songs, she discusses how she has engaged with a tumultuous world through her art.
