Gallery Talk with Jason Moran: Sounds like Adrian Piper

Detail of Adrian Piper's The Mythic Being; I/You (Her), 1974

Tickets & Info

For acclaimed young composer and pianist Jason Moran, an interest in the Walker’s permanent collection, and the work of Adrian Piper in particular, led to the creation of a new composition and performance. The result is the theatrical jazz suite entitled Milestone, informed by his recent study of Piper’s photographic work, The Mythic Being: I/You (Her) (1974), and integrates its conceptual framework. Join Moran, vocalist Alicia Hall and Walker Curator Betsy Carpenter for a tour and discussion of The Mythic Being and the other works that captured Moran’s imagination. Meet in the Bazinet Garden Lobby.

Transforming Jazz: Philip Bither on Jason Moran

“The possibilities are limitless," Jason Moran wrote to Walker Performing Arts curator Philip Bither in 2003. He was referring to a new commission by the Walker to create Milestone, a jazz performance based on the center's permanent collection, but, as Bither writes, "his sentiment could have applied equally to the relationship that would develop over the next fifteen years between the artist and the Walker." As Moran opens his first solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, we share Bither's essay from the Walker-produced exhibition catalogue for Jason Moran.
