From ping-pong to paper gliders, many artists in the exhibition Multiple Realities used play and humor to make change. Tap into your own creativity and sense of humor with activities connecting to the pointedly playful artwork on view.
Free First Saturday features free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month. Tickets are available online in advance and on-site at the Main Lobby desk on the day of the event. Free admission 10 am–5 pm; activities 10 am–3 pm.
Art-making Activity: It’s Me ID, 10 am–3 pm
ID cards can be powerful, but they can’t tell a person’s whole story. What are some important things you want people to know about you? Join teaching artist Prerna to draw and decorate your own “ID card” representing something about who you are and how you see yourself.
Art-making Activity: Flying Messages, 10 am–3 pm
Some artists included in the exhibition Multiple Realities shared artistic ideas in playful ways, like Czech artist Milan Knížák, who made paper airplanes to deliver secret, silly messages. Get into the spirit of play by making your own paper helicopter! What secret message will you deliver?
J.K. Ping-Pong Club, 10 am–3 pm
One part art installation and one part sport, J.K. Ping-Pong Club by artist Július Koller was launched in the 1960s and used ping-pong to encourage community gathering and self-organized play. In the spirit of this project, families are invited to grab paddles and volley together for a lively game of ping-pong.
Short Film: Mitch Match #22, 10 am–3 pm
Stop by the Bentson Mediatheque to watch Mitch Match #22, a stop-motion animation created by director Géza M. Tóth using only matchsticks. The three-minute film will loop between 10 am and 3 pm.
Tour for Families, 11:30 am
Tour for General Audiences, 1 pm
Join a Walker educator for a family-friendly guided tour of artworks on view in the galleries at 11:30 am (40 min.) or take a guided tour for general audiences at 1 pm (60 min.). Tours meet at the Main Lobby desk, five minutes before the tour start time. Tours explore a selection of artworks across current exhibitions and include interactive discussion.
Visit the Walker Art Center Library, 10 am–3 pm
The Walker’s library is open! Explore the stacks and find inspiration in the Walker Library’s collection of artful books. The library entrance is through the Art Lab.
Multidisciplinary artist Prerna was born in Mumbai, India. Prerna is interested in evaluating her relationship to being the subject and being subjected. She has been awarded global opportunities and residencies, has exhibited nationally, and recently completed an MFA.
