“A genre-defying band that sounds like nothing else on this planet . . . easily ranks among the more ferociously effective septets in jazz.” —Chicago Tribune

Don’t miss some of jazz’s most dynamic and flexible musicians in an evening of large-group compositions, free jazz, and world-music explorations. Featuring unique instrumentation, virtuoso performances, and constantly shifting meters, the kaleidoscopic amalgam of Douglas Ewart’s Inventions Clarinet Choir defies classification. The ensemble includes fellow Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) members Ed Wilkerson, Jr. (Shadow Vignettes, 8 Bold Souls), Mwata Bowden, and Jeff Parker (New Horizons Ensemble). These luminaries are joined by Mankwe Ndosi (singer/poet), Darius Savage (bass), Dushun Mosley (drums), Dee Alexander (singer), and Duriel Harris (poet). The concert, which opens with the knock-down, freedom-seeking rhythms of bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake, celebrates the AACM’s 40th anniversary.

Here, Devyn Springer follows the thread between Rogers's personal artistic practice and his recent commission photographing the jazz innovators of the Walker's Sonic Universe Project.
