In celebration of the opening of the exhibition celebrating local artist Tetsuya Yamada, join us for a dynamic conversation between the artist and a panel of fellow creatives as they discuss the connections between life and art through their respective practices.

Following the artist talk, join us at 7 pm for a reception in the Cargill Lounge to enjoy conversation, libations, and small bites that celebrate local and sustainable food from Chef Karyn Tomlinson, owner of the restaurant Myriel in St. Paul.

These events are free, but the talk does require a ticket. Free tickets to the artist talk are available from the Main Lobby desk starting at 5 pm.

Gallery admission is free on Thursday nights, 5–9 pm. Admission tickets are available at the Main Lobby desk.

Bio

Hailing from Minnesota, Karyn Tomlinson saw at an early age the power of food in connecting people and was eventually drawn to restaurant hospitality. After cooking school at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, a stint as a pastry chef, and a season at Faviken under Magnus Nillson, she found herself on an unlikely career path with an aggressive trajectory. Tomlinson was the first woman to win a Cochon 555, a national hog butchery competition, and was featured in the 2020 documentary A Woman’s Place by Rayka Zehtabchi. Most recently, Tomlinson opened Myriel in St. Paul, which focuses on authentic hospitality, timeless techniques, and a close connection to a small and innovative farming community. Seasonality and natural inspiration is key to its identity. The reastaurant has garnered widespread attention and has been featured in publications such as Esquire, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.

Tetsuya Yamada (Japan, b. 1968) is a Twin Cities–based artist whose interdisciplinary practice blurs the lines between art, design, and craft. Yamada has been twice awarded the McKnight Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists and the McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Ceramic Artists. He has participated in artist residencies at the European Ceramic Work Center (EKWC) in the Netherlands and at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Yamada has had exhibitions at Francis Naumann Fine Art, Franklin Art Works (MN), and the Clay Studio (PA). His work is in the collections of the Mint Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, and the Walker Art Center. The Walker-organized exhibition Tetsuya Yamada: Listening is the first US museum presentation of the artist’s work.
