Collage as Communication: Exploration of Kandis Williams

Tickets & Info
Join us for an evening exploring the exhibition Kandis Williams: A Surface with exhibition curator Taylor Jasper. The night begins with a discussion on the medium of collage as a method of critique and reassembly—a tool that holds generative power for artists like Williams, particularly in relation to race, gender, and visibility. This program is designed to prioritize and create space for Black and BIPOC attendees, fostering an environment for meaningful conversations and perspectives from these communities.
Following the talk, participants will engage in a guided reading and group discussion of selected texts that offer critical context for Williams’s work. These readings—drawn from scholarly essays reprinted in the exhibition catalogue—consider topics ranging from racial surveillance and labor to embodiment and the archive. Together, we will explore how these frameworks resonate with and deepen our understanding of the exhibition. You are invited to stay and create your own collages in the adjacent Art Lab.
During Free Thursday Nights from April 24 through May 15, visitors are also encouraged to visit the Walker’s library to read the full reprinted texts in the catalogue.
This event requires a free ticket. Registration is available online. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Gallery admission is free on Thursday nights, 5–9 pm.
