Part of the Insights 2020 Design Lecture Series, this free event will be presented as a webcast and features a never-before-seen prerecorded lecture—shot from Ruben Pater’s studio in Amsterdam and heavily illustrated with images of his work.

Unwilling to regularly tour overseas due to the outsized carbon footprint of global air travel, Ruben Pater originally proposed a pre-recorded talk, a format now more relevant than ever. Focusing on the ethics of design, this vital lecture will begin by tackling the unspoken realities of designers working remotely across the globe, and from there dive into social and political issues such as climate change, surveillance, and affordable housing. Pater is the author of The Politics of Design, a book which AIGA.com deemed “[…] the kind of literature that should be handed out to all students on their first days at art school, along with all the Albers, Berger, Benjamin, and Sontag that form the backbone of the design curriculum—an up-to-date assessment of the landscape through which all modern visual practitioners must navigate.”

Following the live webcast, this event will be archived at https://walkerart.org/insights-design-lecture-series/ where you can find over 60 past Insights design talks.

Watch: Chobani's Leland Maschmeyer at Insights 2020

In this far-ranging talk, design expert Leland Maschmeyer lays out his vision for brand building as the practice of contemporary myth-making. Starting with humanity’s ability to create visual and conceptual meaning, Leland dives into a variety of primal “’patterns”—the seven deadly sins, the redemption arc, Batman—illustrating how these patterns show up again and again throughout human history, each time activated through new forms and methods. The lecture concludes with two case studies in transformative rebrand projects—Naturalist and Chobani—which strive to tap into these core patterns and leave a lasting impact not just on the respective companies and industries, but on our shared imagination as a whole.
