Joel and Ethan Coen are directors, writers, and producers known professionally as the Coen Brothers. Born and raised in St. Louis Park, MN, in the 1950s, they earned Academy Award nominations and major awards at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival for their 1991 film Barton Fink ; it was the first film to claim best picture, best director, and best actor awards in the festival’s history. Additional audience success followed upon the release of Fargo (1996), a dark comedy based in the Minnesota-North Dakota region, and The Big Lebowski (1998), a crime comedy that spurred a massive cult following its release. Their films No Country for Old Men (2007), A Serious Man (2009), and Inside Llewlyn Davis (2013) were included on the BBC’s 21st Century’s 100 Greatest Films.
