Sensory Friendly Sundays

Sensory Friendly Sunday is a free event designed for kids, teens, and adults with sensory processing differences, autism, or developmental disabilities.

Every second Sunday of the month from 8 to 11 am, the galleries are closed to the general public, allowing visitors to enjoy the museum in a calm environment. Accommodations such as quiet spaces, fidgets, and sunglasses are provided. Experience the Walker’s exhibitions, make art, or just come enjoy the change of scenery.

To prepare for your visit, check out this Social Narrative.

Sensory Friendly Sunday was developed in consultation with the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) and the University of Minnesota’s Occupational Therapy Program.

The Walker-commissioned piece, titled Okciyapi (2021), is the first public artwork by a Native artist to be sited in the Garden. Both a gathering place and participatory work, the sculpture is composed of rings of seating elements surrounding a central water feature.
