The Walker Cinema

A dark gallery space with low seating, where several people sit watching a large projection of a close-up wristwatch displayed on a screen.

The Cinema is the hub for the Walker Art Center’s moving image program, presenting contemporary and historical artist film practices—from narrative shorts to long-form documentaries, experimental sound and image, and multidisciplinary performances. The space also hosts artist residencies and long-running programs such as the Walker Dialogues and Retrospectives Series.

Located off the Main Lobby, the Cinema is a state-of-the-art space. The 340-seat auditorium features 16mm, 35mm, and digital cinema projection with a robust surround-sound system. Renovated in 2012 with a $1 million grant from the Bentson Foundation, the enhanced 21st-century theater is one of the best places to view films in the country.

As one of just a few programs of its kind in the country, the Walker’s moving image program explores the art of cinema, showcasing the work of boundary-pushing filmmakers.
