Walker Art Center's Target Free Thursday Nights in December Include The Artist's Bookshelf Book Club and Gallery Tours

The Walker Art Center’s Target Free Thursday Nights in December are highlighted by another edition of the Walker book club The Artist’s Bookshelf, featuring Nicole Krauss’ The History of Love (December 7, 7 pm). With consummate, spellbinding skill, Nicole Krauss draws together the stories of Leo Gursky and 14-year-old Alma. This extraordinary book was inspired by the author’s four grandparents and by a pantheon of authors whose work is haunted by loss—Bruno Schulz, Franz Kafka, Isaac Babel, and more. It is truly a history of love: a tale brimming with laughter, irony, passion, and soaring imaginative power. Other highlights in November include tours of the Walker building (December 14, 6 pm) and of the exhibitions Heart of Darkness (December 7, 6 pm), featuring three immersive works which explore the promise and peril of darkness; Body Politics: Figurative Prints and Drawings from Schiele to de Kooning (December 21, 6 pm), which presents works from the first half of the 20th century which explore the human form and the politics of the body; and Eva Hesse Drawing (December 28, 6 pm), the first exhibition in more than 20 years to focus on the role played by one of the most influential artists of the postwar era.

Narrated by a 70-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl, Nicole Krauss’ novel is a literary labyrinth that stirs up heavy emotions of loneliness, loss, and love. These themes are also present in the cluttered, uninhibited rooms of Kai Althoff’s installation in the exhibition Heart of Darkness. The Artist’s Bookshelf is a book club that focuses on shared themes between contemporary literature and contemporary art. Participants are encouraged to attend the public tour of the related Walker exhibition before each discussion to learn about ways that artists and writers explore common themes. Featured authors are not present at the discussions.
