Walker Art Center’s Raising Creative Kids Programs in January and February Feature Free First Saturday Events Inspired by Cindy Sherman and Painter Painter Exhibitions and Arty Pants: Your Tuesday Playdate
Minneapolis, December 13, 2012—Walker Art Center’s Raising Creative
Kids programs in January and February feature Free First Saturday
programs inspired by the exhibitions Cindy Sherman, (Pictures of You,
Saturday, January 5) and Painter Painter, (Saturday, February 2.) Also in
January and February the Walker presents Arty Pants: Your Tuesday
Playdate, the popular program designed to nurture creativity and engage a
child’s mind. Arty Pants programs are presented on the second and fourth
Tuesdays of each month and feature art projects, films, gallery activities,
and story readings.
Free First Saturdays Are for Families
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from
10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First
Saturday.
Families can enjoy live performances, films, gallery adventures, and handson
art-making from 10 am–3 pm. Activities recommended for ages 6–12.
January Free First Saturday: Pictures of You
Saturday, January 5, 10 am – 3 pm
Join us for a day where you can be anyone you want to be. Inspired by the
exhibition Cindy Sherman, activities let you discover the many different
sides of yourself with performances, films, art-making, and tours.
Art Making: WAC Portrait Studio, 10 am–3 pm
Cargill Lounge
Put a spin on traditional portraiture with photographer Sam Hoolihan.
Invent characters with costumes and accessories you design. Photos will be
presented on a large screen during the event and on the web after the
event at flickr.com/photos/walkerart.
Art Making: Mirror Images, 10 am–3 pm
Art Lab
Reflect on the intricacies of your facial features and see yourself in new ways
through playing, drawing and interactive games. Join artist Ilene Krug
Mojsilov as she host this transformative installation.
Workshop: Create a Character, 10:30, 11:30 and 12:30
Garden Terrace Room
Families work together in this fun, interactive theatre workshop from
Children’s Theatre Company. Using their favorite characters from films and
books as inspiration, families will select small props and costume pieces
from a Box of Fun and work together to create their own characters and
explore all the ways they can express themselves onstage. The workshop
will end with an opportunity for families to share what they have created.
Dance Party, 10:30 am– 2:30 pm
William and Nadine McGuire Theater
Kids and families take over the McGuire Theater for an all-day dance party.
Come show off your moves as DJs spin a mix of popular favorites.
February Free First Saturday: Painters’ Paradise
Saturday, February 2, 10 am–3 pm
Join us for a day inspired by the new exhibition Painter Painter featuring
special guests, art-making, and kid-focused tours. Step into the studio and
find out more about the creative art of painting during this amazing day of
free family fun.
Gallery Activity 11 am–2 pm
All Galleries
Wander your way through the galleries explore artworks by asking
questions, having conversations and even using your senses.
Art Making: Artists’ Studio 10 am–3 pm
Art Lab
Join a day-long interactive studio session with a round-robin roster of
painters. Step into the studio and find out more about the creative art of
painting.
Arty Pants: Your Tuesday Playdate
Tuesdays January 8 and 22; February 12 and 26; 11 am–1 pm
For kids ages 3–5 and adults
Free with gallery admission; Walker members and kids are always free
