Walker Art Center's 2007-2008 Performing Arts Season Opens With Exclusive U.S. Engagement/U.S. Premiere of Super Night Shot by London/Berlin's Gob Squad

“Part real-life documentary, part statement on modern society, hilarious, beautiful and saddening, Gob Squad are as modern and real as you can get.“ —Ely Standard (England)

Super Night Shot begins exactly one hour before you arrive at the theater. Declaring war on anonymity, the U.K./Germany’s Gob Squad takes to the streets of Minneapolis armed with videocams as the public becomes unwitting costars in this often moving, surreal, and comic journey of surprises and unplanned encounters. Once back in the theater, the footage is mixed live by the Gobbers on four screens, culminating in a wide-screen urban adventure. The exclusive U.S. engagement and performance of Gob Squad’s Super Night Shot, Thursday–Saturday, September 20–22, at 9 pm in the William and Nadine McGuire Theater, is part of the new five-part series In:Site/Out, which reimagines how and where live performance can be experienced.

Arrive early for a free drink in 20.21 (included in ticket price) and welcome Gob Squad to the McGuire Theater at each night’s season launch party!

Gob Squad is a group of U.K. and German artists, working collectively with performance, theater, installation, and video since 1994. Based in Nottingham, Berlin, and Hamburg, the group makes and presents its work in urban sites such as offices, houses, shops, railway stations, and hotels as well as in galleries and theaters. The Walker presented Gob Squad’s Safe as part of the 2001 Out There series.

Using the language of film, TV, and pop music to explore the complexities and absurdities of life today, Gob Squad’s work is a search for beauty, meaning, and humanity amongst the glittering facades and dark corners of contemporary culture.

Gob Squad often place home-made magic and spectacle next to the banality of everyday life, setting theater and the “real world” on a collision course and capturing the results on video. Sometimes improvised, sometimes strictly choreographed, the work is provocative, entertaining, and emotionally charged.

Gob Squad’s permanent members are Johanna Freiburg, Sean Patten, Berit Stumpf, Sarah Thom, Bastian Trost, and Simon Will. Other artists are invited to collaborate on particular projects. Current collaborators include Dariusz Kostyra, Ilia Papatheodorou, Erik Pold, Elyce Semenec, Sharon Smith, Nina Tecklenburg and Laura Tonke (performance), Sebastian Bark and Jeff McGrory (sound design), and Miles Chalcraft and Robert Shaw (video).

Tickets to Gob Squad’s Super Night Shot are $25 ($21 Walker members) and are available at walkerart.org/tickets or by calling 612.375.7600.
