Walker Art Center Tours in June Offer Last Look at Exhibition Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton
This June, Walker Art Center gives visitors a last chance to experience a guided exploration of the exhibition Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton, closing June 14. The artist’s first U.S. survey, Live Forever features some 100 paintings, prints, and drawings, from Peyton’s earliest portraits of rock idols like Sid Vicious and Kurt Cobain to more recent images of friends and luminaries, including Matthew Barney, Marc Jacobs, Al Gore, and Michelle Obama. Her small, jewel-like paintings capture an artistic zeitgeist using a visual vocabulary that could only have been produced in late 20th-century urban America.
Guided tours of Live Forever take place June 5, 13, and 14. Visitors can also explore the Peyton exhibition on June 4 during a Sound Bites tour. All Sound Bites tours are held on select Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7 pm and illuminate an artist or work of art from the Walker’s world-class collection or one of its special exhibitions. The Walker offers two additional Sound Bites tours on the artist Dan Graham (June 11) and James Turrell (June 21), whose Sky Pesher, 2005 chamber is permanently installed on the Walker campus.
Other June tours (June 7, 18, and 26) focus on the newly opened exhibition The Quick and the Dead. With an international group of 53 artists in a range of media, The Quick and the Dead expands beyond the here and now, reaffirming conceptual art’s ability to engage some of the deeper mysteries and questions of our lives. The exhibition brings together more than 90 works, juxtaposing a core group from the 1960s and ‘70s with more recent examples that might only loosely qualify as conceptual.
Gallery admission is $10 adults; $8 seniors (65+); $6 students/teens (with ID); and free to Walker members and children 12 and under. Admission free with a ticket to a same-day Walker event, $4 with a ticket stub up to six days after an event. Gallery admission is free to all every Thursday evening from 5–9 pm and on the first Saturday of each month.
