Walker Art Center Tours in August Explore Ongoing Exhibitions Dirt on Delight, Tomas Saraceno, and The Quick and the Dead
Walker Art Center tours in August offer visitors a chance to dig deeper into the museum’s ongoing exhibitions, including Dirt on Delight: Impulses That Form Clay, on view through November 29. Synonymous with the building of industries and cultures, clay also has a tactile and earthen sensuousness that makes it a medium with which artists have long created forms, objects, and ornaments. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Dirt on Delight presents works ranging from modestly scaled pots to large sculptures that cross a spectrum of art, craft, and outsider practices.
Guided tours of Dirt on Delight take place August 15, 23, and 27. Visitors can also explore the exhibition during an August 20 Sound Bites tour, focusing on the ceramics work of featured artist Lucio Fontana. Sound Bites tours are held on select Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7 pm and illuminate an artist or work of art from the Walker’s world-class collection or one of its special exhibitions. The Walker offers three additional Sound Bites tours in August, including a closer look at artist Kris Martin’s buried work, Anonymous II, featured in the exhibition The Quick and the Dead (August 6); Isamu Noguchi’s Theater Set Element from Judith (August 13); and artist Tomás Saraceno (August 27).
August tours also focus on the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Lighter than Air (August 7, 29, 30), in which the artist looks to scientific principles and technological innovations to push the conventions of art and architecture and imagine sustainable communities and new models for social interactions. Also, tours are offered for The Quick and the Dead (August 2, 13, 21), a show that expands beyond the here and now, reaffirming conceptual art’s ability to engage some of the deeper mysteries and questions of our lives. The exhibition brings together more than 90 works, juxtaposing a core group from the 1960s and ‘70s with more recent examples that might only loosely qualify as conceptual.
Gallery admission is $10 adults; $8 seniors (65+); $6 students/teens (with ID); and free to Walker members and children 12 and under. Admission free with a ticket to a same-day Walker event, $4 with a ticket stub up to six days after an event. Gallery admission is free to all every Thursday evening from 5–9 pm and on the first Saturday of each month.
