Walker Art Center Shop Stocked for Holiday Season

Holiday shoppers looking for unique gift ideas will find them at the Walker Art Center Shop. The Shop has expanded its eclectic array of artist-designed jewelry, unique objects for home and office, creative games and toys for kids, and books on contemporary art and culture. Whether it’s a vase made of environmentally friendly 100 percent waterproof paper, beautiful bowls including one made by casting real fruit, the return of the original Colorforms first introduced in 1951, or bracelets handmade from recycled records, shoppers will discover a wide selection of creative gifts. Items exclusive to Minnesota include scarves, hats, and mittens made from recycled boiled wool garments, “Dreamscapes” porcelain bowls, hand-made sterling silver folding necklaces, and the aforementioned vases and bracelets. In addition, a limited-edition holiday dark chocolate mint bar by BT McElrath is available. Shop hours will be expanded throughout the holiday season and merchandise is available at shop.walkerart.org.

Hella Jongerius for Artecnica

Beads&Pieces, a Design with Conscience project, is a four-piece ceramic collection designed by Hella Jongerius. The collection is handcrafted by artisans located in the primary cocoa leaf-growing region of Peru. With the help of Aid to Artisans, a nonprofit organization that provides practical assistance to artisans worldwide, Artecnica offers an alternative economic reality to the people of this dangerous and oppressed area. With its black ceramic bodies embellished with delicate pink beading, Beads & Pieces is classic Jongerius. Ceramic floral bouquets and wooden beads add to the artful juxtaposition of elements.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, designer Tonia Kim moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as a photographer’s assistant. Surrounded by aspiring artists working in various mediums, she resurrected her creative side. With a personal fashion philosophy that emphasized accessorizing, Kim pursued jewelry design. She sold her first collection in 1999 and continued to design while in Chicago pursuing a law degree. Her Toki Collection, begun in 2003, incorporates sterling silver, 10K gold, pearls, and gemstones. Toki Collection is named for the Chinese horoscope of the designer as well as a childhood nickname that translates to rabbit in Korean.

Ex Ovo is a line of progressive sterling silver jewelry that is architectural, minimalist, and sensual. Katrin Zimmerman was born in Germany and educated in Switzerland, England, and China. Her exposure to different cultures is evident in her approach to design, which is strongly influenced by the cultural heritage of the Far East. The focus of her design aesthetic is reduction with an emphasis on the essence of an organic shape or the inherent qualities of synthetic or natural materials. The idea is to bring out singularity through simplicity. A member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America, she is based in New York City, where Zimmerman has her own studio/showroom in Harlem.

As the daughter of a geologist, Ria Charisse grew up looking closely at minerals and rock formations.
