Walker Art Center Presents Target Free Thursday Nights

With the grand opening of its new expansion on April 17, the Walker Art Center presents the official launch of

Target Free Thursday Nights

. Sponsored by Target, the Walker’s galleries are free from 5-9 pm every Thursday evening and are complemented by a range of Walker programs. Explore an exhibition, watch a film, make art, and ask questions at these evenings made possible by Target. At the launch event for Target Free Thursday Nights, from 5-9 pm Thursday, April 28, enjoy an artist talk by Ed Templeton, DJ beats by Tarik Moody, a Drop-In Art Activity to create mail art inspired by the architecture of Herzog & de Meuron, and Artist-in-Residence Ericka Beckman’s double-screen projection Frame UP.

Artist Talk

_Outsider on the Insid_e: Ed Templeton, 7 pm

Walker Cinema
A product of Southern California living, Ed Templeton’s art encompasses the daily life of a professional skateboarder and artist amidst strip malls, beaches, and youth culture. In this talk, Templeton will discuss how his surroundings inform his painting and photography. Also included are segments of Good & Evil, a skateboarding film by Templeton’s skate company Toy Machine, and Deformer, a biographical documentary about Templeton’s life by Mike Mills.

7 pm: See new works as well as old favorites on this tour of the Permanent Collection.

Drop-in Art Activity: Greetings from the Walker!

Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab, 5–9 pm

Visit the new Art Lab and create a piece of mail art inspired by the architecture of Herzog & de Meuron. Then send your salutations off to far-away friends using the postcard’s ready-to-mail design.

Kick back and relax while you check the beats and breaks of DJ Tarik Moody.

Ericka Beckman’s Frame UP, 5–9 pm
Lecture Room

As the new Walker rose from a hole in the ground to a shimmering cube on the landscape, Artist-in-Residence Ericka Beckman captured over 100 hours of the construction on film. Her 10-minute double-screen projection runs continuously throughout the evening.
