Walker Art Center Cinemateca Series on Last Friday of Each Month Continues with Camila Guaman Urzua's The Sugar Curtain

A reemergence of Latin American films on the international scene in recent years has resulted in a wealth of vivid, groundbreaking work. The Walker Art Center’s Cinemateca film series continues its run of screenings on the last Friday of each month with a recent film from Cuba, Camila Guzmán Urzúa’s The Sugar Curtain (El Telón de Azúcar), on Friday, February 29, 7:30 pm.

In her autobiographical documentary, Urzúa returns from the United States to Cuba to reflect on her idyllic childhood shared with her classmates from the mid-1970s to the 1980s—the most prosperous economic period in the country’s recent history. Her generation was filled with hope that went unfulfilled when Cuba’s financial support from socialist countries abroad dried up as the Soviet Union spun apart in the early 1990s. 2006, France/Cuba, in Spanish with English subtites, 82 minutes. Followed by a post-screening discussion led by August H. Nimtz, Jr., Professor of Political Science, University of Minnesota.

The Cinemateca series continues on Friday, March 28, with Mutum from Brazil, and Friday, April 25, with Silent Light (Stellet licht) from Mexico.
