The Walker Art Center's May Free First Saturday is the Place to Be for Family Fun
Fun for people of all ages can be found at Once Upon a Place, the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event from 10 am–5 pm Saturday, May 6. Featured events include a performance by Young Dance, a company of Twin Cities dancers ages 7–18; a gallery crawl looking at works by artists from around the globe who share images of distant lands; an art lab activity making collage maps led by artist Mara Pelecis; a series of bilingual story readings which celebrate community; and a screening of the feature-length Iranian film Hayat.
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once Upon a Place
Saturday, May 6, 10 am–5 pm
This month, share stories about your community after visiting the exhibition OPEN-ENDED (the art of engagement).
Gallery Crawl: Travel Stops, 10 am–2 pm
Navigate the world from the Walker’s galleries. Go to far-off destinations as you tour works by artists from around the globe who share images of distant lands.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Community Garden, 10 am–3 pm
Make a flower sculpture for the community garden and watch it grow. Activity led by Christina Alderman.
Performance: Voices by Young Dance, 11 am and 1 pm
In every city there are stories waiting to be told and connections to be made. Young Dance, a company of Twin Cities dancers ages 7 to 18, performs segments from Voices, a production based on their interviews with influential individuals from our community.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Map your world!, 11 am–4 pm
Are you a crafty cartographer? Map the sites that reside in your neighborhood or in your imagination during a collage activity led by artist Mara Pelecis.
Story Reading: Celebrating Neighborhoods, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 pm
Take a neighborhood stroll during a series of story readings, which take listeners on a variety of community adventures.
- An English and Spanish story time will be led by Caitlin Cowan, an early literary specialist with the Minneapolis Public Library.
On the Big Screen: Hayat, directed by Gholam-Reza Ramezani, 2 pm
The night before her big exam, 12-year-old Hayat’s father falls ill and needs to be taken to the hospital. Left to care for her younger siblings, she races all over her Iranian village searching for someone to help so she can make it to school on time. 2005, Iran, Farsi, 35mm, 80 minutes.
