Target Free Thursday Nights in September Highlighted by Preview of Upcoming Performing Arts Season and Poetry Reading with Members of the Flarf Collective
Target Free Thursday Nights at the Walker Art Center offer visitors a chance to enjoy an exhibition, take in a lecture, watch a film, take part in a workshop, and ask questions every Thursday night from 5–9 pm. In September, Target Free Thursday Nights programs include a preview of the Walker’s upcoming 2008–2009 performing arts season, presented by senior performing arts curator Philip Bither (September 18, 7 pm). Other highlights in September include a Free Verse poetry event with the Flarf Collective (September 25, 7:30 pm), a controversial poetry movement whereby authors often use Internet search engines to create works that use un-poetic language. Four members of the collective will be on hand to share their unique writing procedures. Also, Sound Bites gallery talks are offered throughout the month on select Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7 pm. Sound Bites illuminate an artist or work of art from the Walker’s world-class collection or one of its special exhibitions.

Senior performing arts curator Philip Bither illuminates the entire 2008– 2009 season with music and video highlights, including samples from the masters of intimate dance, Eiko & Koma (Hunger, October 9–11); inventive multimedia theater explorers the Builders Association (Continuous City, October 23 –25); and the four-part series UK Performance Now! (winter/spring 2009), which introduces innovators from across the pond.

The controversial poetry movement Flarf began in 2001 as a small e-mail list composed of writers dedicated to the creation of poems using un-poetic language, often with the aid of Internet search engines (a practice sometimes called “Google-sculpting”). The Flarf Collective is now 30 members strong, with participants scattered across the United States and Europe. Join us for a special Free Verse Evening of Flarf as four of these poetry provocateurs—Nada Gordon, Sharon Mesmer, K. Silem Mohammed, and Gary Sullivan—share their unique writing procedures.
