Target Free Thursday Nights in August at the Walker Art Center Include Gallery Talk with Artists for the New Exhibition Ordinary Culture and The Artist's Bookshelf
The Walker Art Center’s Target Free Thursday Nights in August are highlighted by a special Gallery Talk with the Artists for the Walker’s latest exhibition Ordinary Culture: Heikes/Helms/McMillian (August 10, 7 pm). Exhibition curator Doryun Chong will be on hand with featured artists Jay Heikes (Minneapolis/New York), Adam Helms (New York), and Rodney McMillian (Los Angeles) to preview the exhibition, which opens on Friday, August 11, and offer a gallery walk-through and discussion. Ordinary Culture features new works that scrutinize culture—that amorphous and abstract yet all-encompassing entity—from various angles. August’s lineup of events also includes the latest installment of the Walker’s book club, The Artist’s Bookshelf (August 3, 7 pm), featuring Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides, and tours of Walker exhibitions.
Target Free Thursday Nights are made possible by Target. Additional support provided by The Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Eugenides’ debut novel takes teen angst to another level, diving head first into the extremes of its peer-pressurized ceremonial violence. Narrated collectively by a group of boys, this darkly humorous story mirrors artist Cameron Jamie’s interest in the fringe rituals of American suburban culture. Before the discussion, join a tour of the exhibition Cameron Jamie at 6 pm. Books for the Artist’s Bookshelf are available in the Walker Shop and at the Minneapolis Public Library. Presented in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library.
