September Target Free Thursday Nights at the Walker Art Center
The Walker Art Center’s Target Free Thursday Nights in September feature a free film screening of The 100 Years Show, a documentary about Cuban artist Carmen Herrera on September 8. The film will be introduced by Walker executive director Olga Viso. The Cinema of Urgency film series continues with an evening of local documentaries on September 15. Other free events include an in-gallery, work-in-progress showing of a new work by Alessandro Sciarroni, a transformative new figure in contemporary dance, on September 22, and a performance and record release of Chris Larson’s Land Speed Record on September 29.

The 100 Years Show
Directed by Alison Klayman, Introduced by Walker Art Center Executive Director Olga Viso
Born in Cuba in 1915, artist Carmen Herrera charted her own alternative modernism while working in virtual obscurity for some seven decades. Filmmaker Alison Klayman (known for her documentary on Chinese artist Ai Weiwei) set out to tell the story of this abstract painter’s life as she approached her 100th birthday. 2016, digital video 30 minutes.
Introducing the screening is Walker executive director Olga Viso, who appears in the film on a visit to Herrera’s studio. Viso has been interested in the artist’s work for years and brought pieces into the collections of both the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, and, more recently, the Walker. Herrera’s sculpture (Untitled, 1971) is on view in the exhibition Art at the Center: 75 Years of Walker Collections until the end of August. In mid-September the Whitney Museum of American Art will open the exhibition Carmen Herrera: Lines of Sight, which spans three decades of her work.

Part of Cinema of Urgency
Part of a dynamic series posing critical questions about today’s most pressing issues, this month’s Cinema of Urgency showcases a selection of contemporary works (some in progress) by Minnesota filmmakers. The evening includes excerpts of documentaries that tell the stories of the rise of progressive political star Ilhan Omar (who recently won a historic primary election) and Winona LaDuke’s environmental activism and defense of the White Earth Reservation. Featured works also address the topics of police violence, forgiving the unforgivable, and more. The program includes works by Remy Auberjonois, E.G. Bailey, D.A. Bullock, Karl Jacob, Dawn Mikkelson, Keri Picket, and Norah Shapiro. All digital format. Program length: 120 minutes.
A panel discussion with the filmmakers will be held after the screening.

A 12-year-old girl raised within a matriarchal household is taken through the right of passage of killing a deer for the first time. Expectations dissolve into chaos, and she finds herself alone, relying on instinct and training to follow through with her decisions and face becoming an adult in the North American wilderness. Killing Mookie

Killing Mookie is the story of Terrence Franklin, a black man killed by the police before the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. The film is a portrait of a failure of justice with little response and no systemic change. (work in progress, excerpt)
Blood Stripe

Our Sergeant returns home to a small town in Minnesota after a third tour with the US Marines in Afghanistan. Unable to sleep, wracked by paranoia and anxiety, it is clear that she carries unseen wounds in addition to the scars she bears on her torso. When a boisterous homecoming party provokes her into an explosive outburst, she runs … deep into the North Woods, but finds she can’t outrun her own heart of darkness. (2016, excerpt)
Risking Light

Land Speed Record Live and LP Release

Join us in the gallery as Yousif Del Valle performs the complete drum track from the newly released, limited-edition LP Land Speed Record. A set by his thrash metal band Hate Beast follows.
The limited-edition, clear vinyl LP contains a rendition of Hüsker Dü’s original drum track played by Del Valle and recorded live at 7th St Entry on April 14, 2016. Published by the Walker, the album serves as the catalogue for Larson’s exhibition and includes liner note essays by Walker exhibition curator Siri Engberg, Walker artistic director Fionn Meade, independent curator Dieter Roelstraete, and Rev. Russell Rathbun, founding preacher at St. Paul’s House of Mercy. A separate, deluxe edition of the LP additionally features a color photograph, signed and numbered by Larson, of the salvaged objects from the home of Hüsker Dü drummer Grant Hart, which are the subject of his film on view in the Walker galleries.
Available in the Walker Shop, this 2016 LP release coincides with the 35th anniversary of Hüsker Dü’s Land Speed Record and Del Valle’s in-gallery performance. Album $19.81 ($17.83 Walker members); deluxe edition $500 ($450).

Art Lab: Paper City
This summer as the construction encompasses the Walker, the Art Lab will be transformed into a construction zone of its own. Through September 3 during gallery hours, join us to help design and build a collaborative paper structure. Fold and connect polygon pieces to participate in the Paper City project and influence ways that this marvelous architecture evolves over time.
Paper City was designed by artist/architect Noa Haim of Collective Paper Aesthetics, the Rotterdam-based design initiative she established in 2008. The project was inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s exploration of the relationship between objects, space, and experience.
Stop in often and watch the structure grow throughout the summer.
