March Tours at the Walker Art Center Bring Tweens and Parents Together at the Exhibition Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton

A unique tour at the Walker Art Center on Saturday, March 21, brings together art enthusiasts of all ages for an exploration of the portraits of painter Elizabeth Peyton. Designed for adults and kids ages 10 –14, the combination tour and workshop experience lets visitors indulge their people-watching curiosities as they tour Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton, an exhibition of portraits of the artist’s friends and personal heroes from the worlds of art, music, fashion, and politics. Talk with your tween about ways that these paintings capture contemporary culture. Investigate the idea of identity and portraiture in a hands-on art-making activity led by Ilene Krug Mojsilov. Guided gallery tours of the exhibition take place at 2 pm on March 6, 26, and 28. Additional March tours focus on collection installations, and the exhibitions Tetsumi Kudo: Garden of Metamorphosis and Text/Messages: Books by Artists. Sound Bites gallery talks, held on select Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7 pm, illuminate an artist or work of art from the Walker’s world-class collection or one of its special exhibitions.

Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton, the artist’s first U.S. survey, features some 100 paintings, prints, and drawings from her earliest portraits of rock idols like Sid Vicious and Kurt Cobain to more recent images of friends and luminaries, including Matthew Barney, Marc Jacobs, Al Gore, and Michelle Obama.

Gallery admission is $10 adults; $8 seniors (65+); $6 students/teens (with ID); and free to Walker members and children 12 and under. Admission free with a ticket to a same-day Walker event, $4 with a ticket stub up to six days after an event. Gallery admission is free to all every Thursday evening from 5–9 pm and on the first Saturday of each month.
