Next Generation of Parks

Join Mark Johnson, cofounder and principal of Civitas, as he explores 21st-century approaches to parks and public space on urban rivers and waterfronts. Johnson is a Denver-based landscape designer and urban planner who has made waves throughout the country with his work on urban waterfronts and his reuse of brownfield and industrial sites. He led the urban design for the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan and completed the Lake Effect Signature Project plan in Wayzata, MN. Presented in partnership with the Minneapolis Parks Foundation and Minnesota Public Radio.

The Coyote Way: Going Back Home

The Walker presents the area premiere of Missy Whiteman’s The Coyote Way: Going Back Home. This sci-fi docu-narrative follows Charlie, who is forced to choose between joining a Native street gang or going on an epic pilgrimage. Featuring an entirely Native American cast, the film was shot in the Minneapolis neighborhoods of Phillips and Little Earth. 2016, US, 30 minutes.

Whiteman (Northern Arapahoe and Kickapoo Nations) is a writer, producer, and director as well as a digital media consultant through her production company Independent Indigenous Film and Media. Her films incorporate indigenous languages, teachings, and values as a means of documentation, revitalization, and preservation. The Coyote Way is a part of the film series INDIgenesis: Indigenous Filmmakers, Past and Present.

HIJACK Making Dances

Fearless dance duo HIJACK (Kristin Van Loon and Arwen Wilder) will create dances in response to a selection of films from the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection. Specializing in the inappropriate, the duo toys with audience expectations through their unconventional interpretation of the space.

Charles Atlas will introduce the screening of Locale (1979) and Channels/Inserts (1982), two of his early collaborative films with choreographer Merce Cunningham, shown in conjunction with the Walker exhibition Merce Cunningham: Common Time.

The Walker partners with a former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member as well as members of the Twin Cities dance community to offer movement-based approaches to the exhibition Merce Cunningham: Common Time.

Composers John Keston and Cody McKinney explain the structure used to create sound for their performances as part of Walker Cunningham Events in this lecture-demonstration.

A conversation follows with Keston, McKinney, Events musical curator Michelle Kinney, and University of Minnesota musicologist Michael Gallope.

Artist Talk: Park McArthur

Park McArthur discusses her work in the exhibition Question the Wall Itself. Using everyday materials that often carry signs of movement, she constructs sculptural environments that draw upon her reliance on caregivers to aid in her daily mobility. A reception with the artist follows.
