More and more, artists are taking an active role in the critical discourse around art and practice. Join us for a conversation with artist-critics working and writing in the fields of dance, visual art, and literature. Featured panelists, including art critic/painter Craig Olson, Mn Artists contributor/artist Andrea Carlson, and dancer/performance critic Linda Shapiro will discuss navigating the sometimes difficult waters of both making and responding — publicly, sometimes critically — to the work made by fellow artists in their scene.
In Mn Artist’s 4 x Forum events, thoughtfully assembled panels of experts and new thinkers—mixing different perspectives, modes of practice, and areas of expertise—come together for issue-specific, moderated dialogues.
Part of Mn Artists’ series of programs geared toward taking some of our cultural scene’s most intriguing, hot-button conversations offline and in-person.
Guerrilla Girls Twin Cities Takeover: Opening-Day Panel Discussion

The Guerrilla Girls Twin Cities Takeover is a festival organized by a consortium of Twin Cities arts and cultural organizations in celebration of the Guerrilla Girls’ 30th anniversary as an activist art collective. Join us for the kickoff events—a multi-venue program hosted by the Walker, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), and the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia).
Taking a cue from Guerrilla Girls workshops held in 2015, the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC) presents a panel discussion with local artists and organizers working for social change including rapper / musician / artist Greg Grease; First year MCAD student / artist / organizer Mase Santos; artist / designer / organizer Ashley Fairbanks.
Visit the Walker’s Art at the Center exhibition, where a selection of Guerrilla Girls posters from the recently acquired archive Portfolio Compleat is currently on view. Then head to MCAD for two exhibition receptions and a student performance, and after that to Mia for the Third Thursday: Art of Rebellion, inspired by the Guerrilla Girls. Exploring the interstitial spaces between live sound and visual art, the in-gallery music series Sound Horizon is intended for both close listening and moments of happenstance for gallery-goers. Come hear a short set by Mary Halvorson, “the most future-seeking guitarist working right now” (NPR)
One of improvised music’s most in-demand guitarists, Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School. Critics have called her “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). The Philadelphia City Paper‘s Shaun Brady adds, “Halvorson has been steadily reshaping the sound of jazz guitar in recent years with her elastic, sometimes-fluid, sometimes-shredding, wholly unique style.”
