It's Family Fun by Design at the Walker Art Center's Free First Saturday in August
Families are invited to learn about the ways that design and ecology are being used to help make the world a better place at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event
Design Matters
from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, August 2. Visit the outdoor exhibition Design for the Other 90% to learn how design innovations are improving people’s lives around the world, then make your own eco-friendly art projects. Eureka Recycling, a local nonprofit waste-reduction organization, will be on-site to help achieve a zero-waste event and educate families on composting, recycling, and reusing materials.
Highlights of the day include art-making activities that turn plastic garbage and pesky plants into sculptural treasures, two live shows filled with the explosive sounds of The Brass Messengers, and the launch of the new WAC Garden Pack, a family activity kit for exploring the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from
10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on the first Saturday of every month.
Free First Saturdays are for Families!

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Art-making for the Entire Family: Plasticycle, 10 am–3 pm
FlatPak House
Turn typical plastic garbage, like saran wrap, sandwich baggies, and water bottles into artistic treasures while learning about the harmful effects that these discarded items have on marine life. Led by artist-instructor Melissa Stang.
Art-making for the Entire Family: Seeded and Weeded, 10 am–3 pm
Tent near Spoonbridge and Cherry
Discover how seeds and pesky weeds can be transformed into art. Join artist Jim Proctor, who brings his favorite art material, buckthorn—an invasive plant species that dominates the understory of Minnesotan forests—along with pine cones and maple and ash seeds to families in this all-natural sculpture workshop.
Eco Education with Eureka Recycling, 10 am–3 pm

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden by checking out a new WAC Garden Pack. This kit contains fun hands-on activities to engage you and your child’s imagination on a self-guided tour of the Garden.
Performance: The Brass Messengers, 11 am and 1 pm
Belvedere stage
The Brass Messengers are a Twin Cities outfit of 11 who play whatever type of music that will fit into their horns. Based around the Gypsy brass styles of Romania, they also put their own spin on Latin American dance rhythms, Afro-Pop, and American country music.
