It's an Evening of Fun by Design! After Hours Celebrates Opening of Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future Exhibition on September 12
A Walker Art Center After Hours preview party celebrates the opening of Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future, presented jointly by the Walker and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, from 9 pm–12 midnight on Friday, September 12. From the sweeping curves of the TWA terminal at JFK Airport and the soaring Gateway Arch in St. Louis to the elegant simplicity of the Pedestal Chair, Eero Saarinen created some of the most powerful and enduring expressions of modern architecture and design. This is the first major retrospective of one of the most prolific, unorthodox, and controversial architects of the 20th century. Sponsored by Target, this Walker After Hours event features music by Roma di Luna; spinning by DJ Mike the 2600 King; screenings of The Gateway Arch: A Reflection of America; a city building art-making activity; cash bars; Wolfgang Puck appetizers; and a Party People Photo Booth to immortalize the evening. Screening: The Gateway Arch: A Reflection of America (2006)

One of Saarinen’s most iconic works is the massive stainless steel Gateway Arch, the monument commemorating the Western Expansion erected in St. Louis. Featuring newly discovered construction footage, this documentary includes interviews with architect Daniel Libeskind and critic Jayne Merkel, as well as construction workers who labored on the project. Narrated by St. Louis native Kevin Kline. 2006, video, 60 minutes.
DJ Mike the 2600 King
Cargill Lounge, 9:30–11:30 pm
Mike David, also known as DJ Mike the 2600 King, started off as a college radio DJ in St. Louis; navigating a pair of turntables and building a record collection he began spinning at parties on campus and around the city. Currently residing in Minneapolis, Mike can be found cutting up funk, disco, classic hip hop, oldies, Miami Bass, and ’80s rock and R&B at parties and clubs around town, opening up for acts such as Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, The Rub, Spankrock, Atmosphere, DJ Steinski, and Prince Paul.

Husband and wife Alexei and Channy Moon Casselle are Roma di Luna, an acoustic duo that co-write songs that are plaintive and sometimes dark, noted for simple instrumentation along with piercing, emotively stunning vocals. Performing at After Hours with five additional musicians, Roma di Luna creates a fuller and more realized sonic experience via drums, electric guitar, bass, banjo, and back-up vocals to complement the couple’s voices, violin, and acoustic guitar.
