Get Ready to Plug In and Turn it Up at Kids Rock the Garden, the Walker Art Center's August Free First Saturday

It’s time to shake, rattle, and roll your way to a day of fun at Kids Rock the Garden, the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event from 10 am–4 pm Saturday, August 5. Featured events include art-making activities to create sculptures and rock posters; a storytelling performance by Cecilia Schiller and Josette Antomarchi of Leelee Goro: How the Animals Got Fire, An African Creation Tale; screenings of short films; a yoga-inspired Garden tour led by Jessica Rosenberg; and performances by bands featuring kids ages 10 to 13.

Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event of rain, outdoor events will be canceled or moved indoors, not rescheduled.

Kids Rock the Garden

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is in full bloom with fun and festivities. In the event of rain, outdoor events will be canceled or moved indoors, not rescheduled.

Art-Making for the Entire Family: Design a Sculpture Park!, 10 am–3 pm

What sculptures grow in your garden? Use clay, pebbles, and wire to create a fantastic three-dimensional artwork.

Story Time: Leelee Goro: How the Animals Got Fire, An African Creation Tale, 11 am

Characters are brought to life with beautifully hand-crafted masks during a storytelling performance by Cecilia Schiller and Josette Antomarchi. Audience participation is encouraged.

Art-Making for the Entire Family: Rock Poster Mania, 11 am–3 pm

Make your very own rock poster with members of Burlesque Design.

Films: Chicken Flicks, 11 am and 3 pm

Which came first the chicken or the egg? Three fun film shorts explore the age-old question: Egghunt by Paul Yan, Frankenchicken by Ann-Maire Denham, and Nineteen by Jörg Hiller.

Garden Tour: Family Yoga Adventure, 12 noon and 2 pm

Yoga instructor Jessica Rosenberg will have you stretching and posing like the Garden art and animals.

Performance: Kids Rock!, 1 pm

Listen to the next generation of music stars. Four bands featuring kids ages 10 to 13 cover classic hits and play their own medleys. This concert culminates a Summer’s Cool class copresented with MacPhail Center for Music.
