Everyone Has a Story to Tell at the Walker Art Center's April Free First Saturday
Families are invited to share their tales at What’s Your Story?, the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event from 10 am–5 pm Saturday, April 1. Featured events include a kids-only open-mic session led by spoken word artists from Teens Rock the Mic; interactive tours of the exhibition OPEN-ENDED (the art of engagement); an art lab activity making time capsules; a reading of John J. Muth’s book The Three Questions; and screenings of short international films.
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What’s Your Story?
Saturday, April 1, 10 am–5 pm
This month the Target Gallery comes to life with the exhibition OPEN-ENDED (the art of engagement), featuring work created by Walker artists-in-residence over the past decade. In a series of unquestionably cool interactive programs, kids and families answer some big questions raised by different residency projects.
Performance: Kids Open Mic
11 am and 1 pm, Target Gallery
Join spoken word artists from Teens Rock the Mic, a program of The Juno Collective Leadership and Literacy in and through the arts, who will perform powerful poetry and show kids how to stand up and express themselves.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: All About Me!
11 am–4 pm, Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Use a variety of materials to construct a time capsule that answers the questions Who was I yesterday? Who am I today? Who will I be in the future?
Family Gallery Adventure: Story Forms
12 noon and 2 pm, Meet in the Cargill Lounge
Get on stage and tell us your story! During a special interactive tour of OPEN-ENDED families perform responses to residency questions on a stage made by artist-in-residence Rirkrit Tiravanija.
On the Big Screen: Globe-trotters
1 and 3 pm, Cinema
Take a trip around the world without leaving your comfy seat with these short films: A Song for Daniel by Jason DaSilva (shot in the US, Canada, and Iraq), Kylie Goldstein, All American by American Eva Saks, and Life by Ariel Zylbersztejn of Mexico. Sponsored by Piper Jaffray Companies.
WAC-ky Tales: The Three Questions by John J. Muth
