Culture with Cocktails! Walker Art Center's Popular After Hours Returns October 20

Dubbed “the coolest thing going” and “the hippest place in the Twin Cities,”

Walker After Hours

launched in 1997 as a local happy hour alternative, attracting thousands of young professionals to the Walker Art Center during its seven-year run. As a longtime supporter of the original After Hours, Target is sponsoring its much-anticipated return in the form of three unique events celebrating the opening of major exhibitions. Walker After Hours returns Friday, October 20, from 8 pm–12 midnight, to mark the opening of the exhibition Heart of Darkness, which features three immersive environments exploring the notion of darkness as a fantastical territory of wonderment and possibly enlightenment. The evening features music by Mike Gunther and His Restless Souls in Gallery 8 Café, screenings of Cameron Jamie’s films in the Cinema, appetizers by Wolfgang Puck Catering, and cocktails in the Target Lounge. Tickets are $20 ($10 Walker members) and available at walkerart.org or by calling 612.375.7600. Save $1 per ticket when purchasing online. Future After Hours take place on February 16 and June 15.

Exhibition Preview: Heart of Darkness

Exploring the promise of darkness, both as artistic strategy and as metaphor, this exhibition presents three immersive environments: a recluse’s cave by Thomas Hirschhorn; a trip to the depths of the ocean with Ellen Gallagher and Edgar Cleijne’s film installations; and an intimate space by Kai Althoff that mingles fear, loneliness, and possibly love.

Design a three-dimensional portrayal of your alter ego using materials favored by Thomas Hirschhorn: packing tape, cardboard, and tin foil. Then contribute your artwork to the temporary installation in the Art Lab.

Tip one back, breathe deep, and take in the slow-burn blues and revival tent theatrics of Mike Gunther and His Restless Souls. With one eye looking for trouble, the other for mercy, Gunther leads a parade of eclectic players as they romp amid the shadows and flames of his distinctly American songs steeped in the pleasure of sin and the promise of salvation.
