Cocktails and Cubism! Walker After Hours Celebrates Opening of Picasso and American Art Exhibition on June 15
A Walker Art Center After Hours preview party celebrates the opening of Picasso and American Art, organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art and making its final tour stop at the Walker, from 9 pm–12 midnight on Friday, June 15. The exhibition examines the fundamental role that Picasso played in the development of American art over the past century by juxtaposing his work with that of groundbreaking American artists who were inspired or influenced by his example. Sponsored by Target, this Walker After Hours event features music by Digitata; a screening of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s classic 1956 film The Mystery of Picasso, which shows the artist at work on his paintings; an Art Lab activity to create collages appropriating the work of Picasso; cash bars; a Target Lounge on the Walker terraces; Wolfgang Puck appetizers; and Pablo’s Party People Photo Booth to immortalize the evening. Tickets are $30 ($15 Walker members) in advance and $35 ($20) at the door, and are available at walkerart.org or by calling 612.375.7600 (includes one complimentary drink). Many American artists throughout the 20th century have referenced the catalytic role of Pablo Picasso’s art on their own artistic achievements. This groundbreaking exhibition compares Picasso’s art with that of luminaries such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Max Weber, Stuart Davis, Arshile Gorky, Louise Bourgeois, David Smith, and Jasper Johns.

Appropriate images of Picasso’s art and incorporate them with an assortment of art-making materials to realize your own masterpiece. Drawing, watercolor, and sculpture materials will be provided to enable your creativity.
Screening: The Mystery of Picasso (1956)

Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot
In 1955, Clouzot joined forces with Picasso to devise an innovative technique in which the filmmaker placed his camera behind a semi-transparent surface on which the artist drew with special inks that bled through. Clouzot captured a perfect reverse image of Picasso’s brushstrokes and the screen itself becomes the artist’s canvas. Here, the artist creates 20 works (most of them, in fact, destroyed after the shoot), ranging from playful black-and-white sketches to Cinemascope color murals which are revealed in minutes through stop-motion animation. 1956, 35mm, 75 minutes.
