Volunteer

Volunteering at the Walker Art Center is a fun, flexible way to share your time and be a vital part of presenting contemporary art. Our volunteers contribute a wide range of experiences and play a vital role in supporting the museum and its visitors.

How to Apply

All volunteer shifts for the Walker are scheduled through the Shiftboard platform. To begin as a new volunteer, please apply via Shiftboard.

At the Walker, we are committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for everyone, including staff, visitors, and volunteers. All volunteers are required to complete a background check following the submission of their application.

Once your Shiftboard application has been received and your background check has been completed, you will receive an email outlining the next steps for volunteering.

For more information, please send an email to the Walker’s Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@walkerart.org or call 612-253-3417.

Volunteer Opportunities

Event Usher

Volunteer ushers are utilized to help support our Performing Arts, Moving Image, Design, and Education events. Volunteer tasks include distributing programs, scanning tickets, directing and seating patrons, and performing light cleaning of the theater after screenings.

Event Greeter

Volunteer greeters help support Walker programming by greeting visitors, providing program information and wayfinding through the building, monitoring attendees for safety and accessibility concerns, and providing exceptional customer service.

After Hours

After Hours volunteers assist with the Walker’s biannual exhibition-opening preview parties. Volunteers contribute to this event in several ways, including welcoming event attendees, wristbanding attendees, assisting with coat check, wayfinding, and other duties as assigned.

Information Guide

Information guides create a friendly, welcoming environment and assist in creating a unique and customized experience for each visitor. Duties include greeting visitors and providing them with information about exhibitions, programs, and events; directing visitors to amenities; and presenting visitors with general overview of the architecture of the Walker.

Free First Saturday

Volunteers for Free First Saturday assist with this free family event every first Saturday of the month from 10 am–3 pm. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, handing out programs, providing directions, assisting with art-making activities, keeping art supplies well-stocked, and helping with clean-up or tear down of workshop spaces. Volunteers in this role must enjoy working with children ages 4 to 10.

Volunteer Benefits

After completing your first volunteer shift, you become eligible for a $10 discount on any level of Walker membership. To redeem the discount, please email volunteer@walkerart.org.

Walker volunteers are also eligible to participate in our Walker Rewards program, which offers additional incentives. This program allows volunteers to exchange their hours worked for select tickets to performances, screenings, mini golf, and memberships!

Volunteers earn one reward hour for each hour volunteered (half-hour shifts are rounded up). Volunteer hours are compiled at the beginning of each calendar month and communicated via email.

* All Walker Rewards hours expire at the end of the fiscal year (June 30) in which they are earned. Volunteers do not earn reward hours for attending orientation sessions or any training sessions that may be required.
