Sophie Calle

1953 — present

Sophie Calle has exhibited extensively since the late 1970s. Her conceptually based work is known for its distinct narrative elements and frequent combination of photographs and text. Throughout, Calle blurs the boundaries between the intimate and the public, reality and fiction, art and life. Solo exhibitions of her work have been staged at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk; Museum of Contemporary Art, Santiago; and Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. In 2023 Calle became the first artist to mount an exhibition filling all the galleries at the Musée Picasso Paris. Her work is included in the collections of numerous institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and many others.
